Part of a larger research by the group Habitats et cultures concerning habitat in Nunavik, the exhibition is composed of 22 scale models of past, present and imaginary houses adapted to the circumpolar territory of our earth.
The models have been built by the students attending a course concerning vernacular architecture in Laval university’s school of architecture.
The encasing of the models which permits the transportation and display of the exhibition have also been designed and built by the students.
Exhibition in 3 parts
The first part shows the circumpolar houses of past centuries: from Thule home to Viking sod house of Greenland.
The second part show houses design or built in the past fifty years by research centers like the SHQ, the CMHC, the Cold Climate Housing Research Center of Alaska, or the group led by professor Leo Zrudlo of Laval university in the seventies.
Finally, the third part shows « imaginary houses » mostly conceived by students of the School of architecture of Laval university attending two studios: Habitats et cultures in the fall of 2013 and Construction et design in the winter of 2014.
