Cette exposition présente le fruit d’un séjour de terrain au Nunavik par les 20 étudiants et 2 profs de l’Atelier/Laboratoire de design urbain de l’École d’architecture, une activité de recherche-création financée par et associée au projet de partenariat Habiter le nord québécois : Mobiliser, comprendre, imaginer (CRSH 2015-2020). La mission de l’Atelier/Laboratoire consiste à contribuer aux réflexions du partenariat en élaborant des projets préliminaires d'aménagement culturellement, territorialement et climatiquement appropriés pour deux villages du Nunavik – Kuujjuaq et Inukjuak.

Du 2 au 9 octobre 2015, les étudiants ont donc arpenté, visité, observé, relevé et analysé le cadre bâti des deux villages dans le but de comprendre le processus de transformation des villages/ territoires/ paysages, les logiques de développement et de construction, l’occupation des espaces communs et les formes d’habitat pour cerner les enjeux et défis de l’aménagement nordique. Ils ont également eu la chance de rencontrer plusieurs acteurs de la planification locale à Kuujjuaq et Inukjuak qui ont généreusement fourni une grande quantité d’informations sur la vie au Nunavik et sur la culture inuit.

Croisés avec d’autres données et informations, les résultats sont présentés de manière très imagée au moyen de cartes interprétatives, de schémas et de photos. Il s’agit d’une base pour l’élaboration itérative d’un atlas numérique qui sera consolidé au fur et à mesure de l’évolution du projet de recherche en partenariat. Les résultats ont été validés par un Comité expert interdisciplinaire de partenaires du projet Habiter le nord québécois et de collaborateurs invités. Nous espérons que l’exposition contribuera à la compréhension des facteurs climatiques, systémiques, techniques, culturels et humains qui ont et continuent d’influencer la planification, le développement et la construction des milieux habités du Nunavik.

This exhibition presents the results of a field trip to Nunavik involving 20 students and two profs of the Urban Design Laboratory conducted at Université Laval’s School of Architecture. This semester-long design-research activity is directly linked to (and financed by) the SSHRC Partnership research project entitled “Living in Northern Quebec: Mobilizing, Understanding, Imagining” (2015-2020). The Laboratory’s mission is to contribute to this ongoing research by way of a design process aimed to develop culturally, territorially and climatically suitable and sustainable environments for the residents of Inukjuak and Kuujjuaq.

From October 2nd to October 9th 2015, the students have conducted site visits, observations and analyses of both villages’ built environment in order to understand the urban development and transformation process, the uses of public space, and to identify issues and challenges of “nordic” planning. They also had the chance to meet with numerous actors involved in the development of Kuujjuaq and Inukjuak. They generously provided information about life in Nunavik and the inuit culture.

Completed with data from other sources, the results are illustrated through interpretive mapping, schemas and photographs. This forms a basis for a future digital atlas that will be consolidated during the larger research project. The results were validated by an interdisciplinary Steering Committee of research partners and collaborators that provides advice at every step of the design-research process. Hopefully, the exhibition will contribute to the understanding of climate, systemic, technical, human and cultural factors that have and continue to influence the planning, development and construction of Nunavik’s residential environments.
